broken trailer axle

After an awesome fishing trip to northern Saskatchewan, my trailer axle snapped on the return trip. This happened after 100 miles of courduroy road. Its a Spartan trailer, probably mid 80's vintage. Any internet search results in Tebben trailers website. The axle is a drop axle, solid stacked design. It broke right at the inside bearing race. Does anyone know the availability of the welded- on stub axle? I think I should probably change both ends, if the stubs are available. Anybody with any similar experiences? TIA...Karl

Re: broken trailer axle

A decent trailer store should either have a replacement axle in stock or be able to get you one on short notice.

If part of the axle broke, I would replace the entire axle assembly. Ya never know where is rotted out and will fail next.

Northern Tool sells stubs at a good price if you have any in your area. *Welding expert not included*

Unless you can weld or know somebody who'll do it cheap it's going to be cheaper and easier to buy a new axle with new hubs etc. Check around online, a 3500lb standard axle should be about $115-$130.

.

One of my utility trailer's experienced a snapped axle as well. For it, I simply replaced the entire axle. And when I replaced the axle, I also upgraded to "next size up" as well. re: If axle is currently 2,800 lbs, then do upgrade to 3,500 lbs axle replacement. While measuring (face hub to face hub), decide if same length or longer length axle is required. On my previous utility trailer, I got its factory axle 1" longer (which means 1/2" longer on each side) and its longer length was better than factory.

One can buy its spindle and weld it on (after grinding hours and hours to get the current one off) but very few welding shops have the equipment to align the new spindle - before welding. Thus, one needs to get the old axle aligned afterwards as well. Thus, paying 2 different specialty shops. Might be less costly to buy new complete axle - that's already aligned. Simply weld on its leaf spring saddles and bolt in place.

Hope this helps.

Re: broken trailer axle

Thank you all for your replies. I sincerely appreciate them. The axle is a square stub about 1 1/2 inches. It is welded underneath a similar sized axle with a plate welded across the front and back of both the stub and the longer main axle. So I think it will be a quick enough fix if I can come up with a square stub spindle. It looks like Champion Trailers sell the square stub spindles, gonna have to get measurements to make sure the stub is long enough. My plan is do both stubs, and then swap for a better trailer(3500 axles) A dealer has good used trailer coming in on trade. This will be an upgrade for sure, and I am not interested in taking any more chances especially when I tow the boat down that same road a couple of times a year. Its kind of a trailer graveyard haha...Thanks again...Karl
