The brass transom screw was frozen in the clamp and it ended up breaking off when I put a wrench to it. When I tried to get the ball end out the ball broke off. Had to drill it out and use an easy out.

Anyway, rather than search for an original screw I bought a 4-inch long 5/8" brass rod, ground a ball on the end with my bench grinder, threaded the shaft, cut off the thumb screw head, beveled both ends and soldered them together. I then ran the threader back down the shaft over the solder and it doesn't look too bad. I couldn't find any brass colored solder and my oxy-acetylene tanks were empty, so I made the joint where it will be hidden inside the transom clamp.

Yeah I could have found the screw somewhere but what fun is that? DSC_7389 (Medium).jpgDSC_7390 (Medium).jpgDSC_7395 (Medium).jpg

Nice job! Remember to put some copper anti-sieze in there to prevent the problem in future. How about a photo of the repair in place (I mean the whole motor!).

Just curious, how strong is that soldering?
Won't it snap the first time you tighten it?
Or is it just for look?

Solder is pretty strong if done correctly. It already held up to running a threader over it. I had to use a 12-inch wrench to work it in and clean out the transom threads. I put anti seize on it. You can turn it with your fingers now. The solder held up with a large wrench on it so it is a strong joint. No worries of it breaking. DSC_7407.jpgDSC_7411.jpgDSC_7412.jpg

It is good to hear that is is strong enough! I guess the strength depends on how much area is covered by the solder.
Just on principles, brazing would have been better, however, you would have needed a different torch for that!
Nice work and even nicer motor!

How did you get the ball in or out of (lack of better terms) the swivel disc?

To remove, just unscrew and it pops out once it bottoms out against the bracket. To install, just tighten the screw against the disk and it pushes itself into the socket.
