Was putting up X bracing on tree house yesterday and Onan on Truck started smoking like a Diesel under load: couple of loud clanks and bangs:confused: Ran just long enough for me to get it back down. Pulled plugs and one cylinder was full of oil.Pulled head off just to see and of course I broke some bolts that were rusted into the Aluminum bell housing. Turned flywheel and outside piston did not move. Slung a rod or broke a wrist pin:mad:. Will try to get it off today to break it all the way down. Anybody know where I can find a Onan genset 4.5 parts. Man I hate to even think about carrying all those boards up 30 steps.

Re: Bucket Truck Onan Died

I'm glad my B-truck has the pump right on the engine, plus it has electric assist for emergency use to get it back down and stowed.

I think your best option would be find another engine. My retired neighbor works a lot on small engines. He finished rebuilding an Onan a few months ago. Said he wished he just scrapped it out because the parts cost so much. A month later he picked up an old mower with a running Onan. It cost him 1/3 the amount he put into the engine he just rebuilt. Good Luck, I know having a bucket truck is great for doing work around the property. Like boats, I'm getting the itis to get a truck with a greater height capacity. :D............SS

Re: Bucket Truck Onan Died

My JD 318 garden tractor uses an Onan 18hp twin, which I thinks is common with other applications, like welders and gens. Used parts are like gold.

FWIW, Honda make an near exact fit engine replacement for the 318, so maybe it's time for an upgrade.

Sound's like your Onan has been hit pretty hard and I have heard they don't always last after a major rebuild.

Awww, you let the Magic Smoke Out!:D:eek:

I am not that into Onans, depending on the age they can be real spendy to rebuild. Repowered with Briggs a while back on my tractor. Then blew that up too. Rebuilt it, kinda spendy. Having learned that lesson, Dad and I have scrounged up a couple good runners ( as spares) for a fraction of the cost of rebuilding just one.

Check out www.mytractorforum.com , lots of good advise there and there is an Onan section if you decide to go into the rebuild. Some for sale as well.

My vote is to repower with Honda.
Finding parts for Onan is difficult, and expensive.

I think you have an onan emerald 4.5 kw (RV), what ever it is, e-bay the parts, do not go through cummin's or they will rake you over the coals.

(To add, on the onan nameplate what is the exact model CCK, BGD, NHD etc)

BGD-FB-or FR-30502C had to call the tech service to get the middle# he said that was the gen volt codes:confused:. Did't mean anything to me but if he says so thats fine. Shoot, got to looking on E-Bay and I can buy a whole truck for 5,500.00:). Rather than spending 1,000.00 on rebuilding this onan. Got me to thinking huummmm. Decisions--Decisions...

Does your tractor have hydraulic PTO? Could it be possible to hook up hoses from it to your truck? Just a thought........SS

That's the problem with telsta lifts all controls are electric over hydraulic.

Sorry, I didn't know. I have Versalift which runs off a pump on the engine and then the electric is supplied by the trucks system.

I think Bobby has a A-28d, if it's anything like our t40c the only hyrdaulic cylinder or motor is for the boom lift????
Our rotation and extend/retract inner boom are all electrical.

BUT, great point,
Bobby can you get an 110 vac inverter and wire it up instead of the gen set????

A portable generator should do the trick as well I would think?

At 4.5 KW, an inverter is out of the question.

This would get you back in the bucket for around $500. Probably last the summer.

Would give you time to score something in eBay, or rebuild your Onan.

Re: Bucket Truck Onan Died

The thing with the these onan's are that they are three phase, so you can run more than one control at once, rotate, up and out. plus the AC plugin at the bucket (or on the utillity box)
I am not sure, but the rotation motor and the extension motor may be
phase to phase (220 AC)

Or get a 3 phase generator ( any old synchronous motor of sufficient HP will work with a controller for the field) and drive it off the PTO. Odds are good the cheap generator, or a good single phase one for permanent install, and the phase-a-matic, perhaps with an idler motor, will do.
