Budget for Lower unit replacement on Johnson 60HP

I am considering buying a boat to fix up but the outboard "needs a new lower unit" according to the seller. Does anyone know what a budget range would be for htis type of repair?? I believe the engine is a 1982 year model

I would recommend the purchase of a used replacement lower unit. You should have little problem finding one through the salvage yards or Ebay. Make sure that the driveshaft and shift rod are the correct length.

My guess is that by the time you are done with it, using a used lower unit for maybe $150 or so, you will have close to 300 into it. Still a bargin if everything else is good and you get a good deal for it.
