Building a detached garage

Building a garage would be relatively simple compared to a house. Our county, which uses the Universal Building Code does not really require extra sophisticated drawings to issue permits from.

Non-the-less, I would like to create a 'plan' based on my specific criteria that I could not only use as a map to build the structure but to present to the building department for purposes of obtaining a permit.

I found this CAD program online. "Do-It-Yourself Garage Designer"

Here is a link to it;

Has anyone ever used something like this?

It is also neat in that it will create a material list as well.

Looks kind of cool.

The headers in the screen shots look a little small though

Just make sure you factor in your local enviroment, we build things different here in Florida then they do in the north.

We're concerned with strapping / holding everything down not wether it will stay up.

Good luck.

Strapping and bolting is all pretty common in the National Building Codes these days. Some locales may go further but we only have a nominal concern for earthquake/tornado/hurricane stuff.

I've used programs like this before.
My old favorite is AutoSketch which is now AutoCAD Lite.
I found one like you ran across specifically for a woodshop. It contained a library of machinery which of course allowed you to set up shop without having to move around 600# of iron.
If you're talking a basic box, you should not have a big problem.
