Building an engine test stand

I realized that it saves a lot of efforts and time to test run the engine before installation, after I got one installed with a bad rear seal. Cursed all the way removing this engine. It started leaking about after 30 mins of running in water. So I decided to build an engine stand, with a battery shelf, remote gas tank and a gauge board. I'm planning on using a working engine stand, reinforce it with a couple front engine mount bars. But it would be nice to see how other people did it. So if anybody has a link with diagrams or at least picture It would be extremely helpful. Also i hope i put this post in a right topic. Thx

You'll also need an exhaust system... Or water will be dumped over the back of the engine. A couple of metre long 4" storm-water drain tubes should do the trick... I'd add a 'click fitting' water connector to the stand somewhere too. ;)

Had the same experience as you years ago. Got the engine all back in the boat and hooked up and after a couple days the rear main seal started leaking. If I had run the engine on an engine stand for a couple days I would have caught this problem. So I went and built one. Doesn't guarantee you might not still have problems with an engine but it sure reduces the chances. I just hook the engine up to a radiator I put on the stand. The marine cooling stuff I deal with in the boat. I just run it on a radiator w/elec cooling fans and a set of headers. Works great. Photo isn't the greatest but it'll give you an idea. I started with a bare bones engine run stand kit I found on eBay and just customized it to what I wanted. Couple of things to note: I increased the height of the console in order to fit a bigger radiator and battery box underneath. And I installed a fuse block in the back to connect all the electrical circuits into.

Oh, man. Pallet? That's really over-thinking it. Haha :)
Go to about 2:30 where he starts running it.

I am taking a sculpture class in my community college so that I can use their welding machines. Therefore I would love to make something more sophisticated than a pallet and 2x4s :)I would also like to upgrade my 2x4s made outdrive stand to something with a steel frame.

the great thing about a wood outdrive stand is that the wood doesnt scrape off the paint on the outdrive like a steel one would.

if you really want to make a run stand, go ahead, make one. then you have to find a place to store it when not in use.

I have two outdrive stands. One that's a jack that makes installing/removing an outdrive a breeze. And one that is just for storage. They're both steel and they both have rubber pads on them. No scratching. The big one I added the rubber pads to. The little one came from Hardin Marine with pads already on it.

Agreed. I eventually put a hook up on the roof at the side of my workshop to hang my engine stand. PITA anywhere else.

Mine, I just have to pull a couple bolts and it folds down to about the size of a pallet. I just lean it against the wall till I need it again. Car project or boat project.

Ayuh,..... When I gotta run a motor outa the boat,.....

I just go get an ole pallet, 'n a couple of 6x6x12" blocks, 'n 2, 2x4x12" studs,.....
I screw the 6x6s to the pallet, with the 2x4s screwed on top of 'em,.....
The motor will sit on the shippin' ears on the flywheel cover on the pallet, 'n the motor mounts on the 2x4s screwed to the 6x6s,.....

Hook up fuel, water, 'n jumper a battery, 'n it's test runnin',........
