I am replacing the fuel line on a 55hp (96) Suzuki two stroke and have to make a decision.. The fitting on the motor calls for the small diameter hose and the tank uses the large. It is a new tank, none suplied with used boat.. I can make the fitting on the tank accept the smaller diameter, but I will have to use a smaller bulb. Am I making problems for myself?? does it matter??

On that horsepower it doesnt matter, the 5/16 will work just fine if you can fit it on the boat or the larger 3/8 will work if you can make it properly seal on the motor side, air leaks on fuel lines are bad so whatever you do make sure there are none.

All I can do on the motor side is to double clamp and tighten h..l out of it. Afraid double clamp might eventually cut line with the constant steering movement.. What about using heat shrink tubing on the motor fitting to increase it's diameter(less squeeze).???. Will it handle gas??

Hi There...

I'm certainly no expert on fuel line sizes, but my little Honda 15 had some sort of metric size fuel line from the tank to the engine and before and after the in-line fuel filter. Honda used some little cheap spring clamps to hold everything together.

When I moved the tank from the stern to the bow (for weight distribution) I decided to replace all those, so I went to my local boat parts store for hose clamps. They recommended a plastic "tie-tie" like one sees in the hardware store to hold electrical wires together. Except these have a little rounded end on them to make the compression equal all the way around the tube. They said everything Mercury makes uses these instead of the "worm screw hose clamps". I bought several at 17 cents each as opposed to the $1.50 per metal clamp.

IM me if ya want a pic of one of them...

Regards,

Steve

Clamps are only meant to keep the hose from blowing off. The hose-to-nipple fit should be good enough that it doesn't leak even if it were not clamped at all.

You can go to a hardware store or auto parts store and get a brass adaptor going from the larger size to the smaller size, that way you wont have to worry about leaks.

had to go with two brass adapters to match the two hoses. the two brass (air hose ) adapters than screw together, worksfine but wondering if I should use teflon tape on the threads? Will gas effect teflon tape??

gas eats teflon tape, you should use some sort of sealer, even if its plumbers putty or even some gas safe gasket sealer.
