I have a 21 ft Bowrider about 3300 lbs and a single axel trailer. I went to replace my bunks and they are only 8 ft 2x4's. Is this a normal set up just two 2x4s for a 3300 lbs boat seems inadequate....

If it is typical is there a special kind of 2x4 need to replace them? one is cracked....

Re: Bunk Replacement

I would use 2x6's, longer if possible.
I have used regular indoor carpeting, only because I've always seemed to have it laying around. Funny, it has outlastedf the outdoor carpeting. I suspect becuase it is thicker.

Re: Bunk Replacement

Most trailers with 2 bunks and a boat of that size/weight usually have keel contact with rollers too.

2x4's are way to small, I'd use a 2x8 PT, carpet itself isn't really the issue just make sure you use stainless steel staples, pricey but you'll regret it if you don't.

Re: Bunk Replacement

I just re carpeted my house so i will put some of that on there... I am going to use pressure treated 2x6's. I guess i will just do the change at the ramp because I have no way to get it off the trailer now....

Thanks guys

You can use a trick I learned here to replace bunks at home. Lower the front of the trailer as low as it will go. Place jack stands with pieces of 2x6 on top underneath the keel of the boat. Crank the front of the trailer back up. This should raise the boat off the trailer high enough to replace the bunks.

Re: Bunk Replacement

Thats what I did a few years ago with my last boat, Funny thing my new boat (1997) needs the same thing done! I premade them using measurements black bunk carpet and Monel (slightly better and more $ than stainless) staples. I used thru bolts under the carpet. a few of them didn't line up so well but it worked! I think I'll do it the same next time but just precut everything, then drill to match and final stapling at the parking area.
