Burned coil after upgrading to Pertronix

I have a 1987 Bayliner 1750 with a 2.3L OMC that was converted to electronic ignition with Pertronix ML-141C and 3 ohm Flamethrower coil.

The coil was only getting 7 volts with the key on due to the resistor wire. It started/ran like that, but was too much resistance for the CDI shift assist to work. Other threads said to cap the resistor wire and go to the + coil with one wire from the alternator post where the ignition wire connects. It was getting 12 volts after that so tried starting it. The boat fired right up but died 20 seconds later, and now the 3 ohm coil is measuring at 0.9 ohms.

Should I not be bypassing the resistor?

I checked the Pertronix website, nowhere did I find anything indicating that their products were Legal to use in Marine Applications

I would stick to points vs pertronix as I personally have not had any luck with pertronix

Have thought of the electronic conversion several times but in the end points work well enough and are not hard to replace when they act up. In all my years of driving cars with points I only had one breakdown due to bad points (1965 VW Bug when I was in college). Meanwhile we had to replace the coil 2x on the GM HEI in our ‘75 Olds over the years we had it.
Points require some maintenance & people don’t like that….
Personally I’d try a Delco EST before going to an aftermarket unit.

Had similiar issue with Merc 3.0 some years back. Had to go with a non resistor type coil, also a flamethrower from Summit racing, called them and explained my issue. Sent me the correct coil and issue was solved
