Burning Rubber Smell - coupler?

1999 Mercruiser 7.4MPI w/ Bravo III drive in a Searay 230

I've checked most of the spun coupler posts and didn't see quite what I was looking for. Here's what's happening:

I'm smelling what I think is burning rubber once i get the boat up on plane. No smoke yet. I don't notice any loss of drive, which i'm guessing I should see pretty quickly if its the coupler causing the burning smell??

Boat has been running fine until now, the only odd thing that happened recently is that my gear lube reservoir overfilled and dripped over the manifolds a bit. (reservoir was overfilled)

Belt is fine, couldn't think of anything else that would cause a burning rubber smell. Any ideas out there to track it down?

Lastly, my manifolds are done and going to be replaced next week but I couldn't figure out how that would cause the smell.

In my opinion it is either the exhaust boots cooking or the coupler spinning. . Did you check the temperature of your boots. You should be able to keep your hand on them.

thanks Wizeone. I didn't check the exaust boots, I'll try that tonight. What generally causes those to start cooking? Engine temp and manifolds seems to be cooling properly.

If the manifolds were cool enough you probably do not have a problem there but...especially if you have the rear risor manifolds (and possible center risor too) exiting water flow is restricted to keep the manifolds from running to cold, causing valve issues. Therfore, I always like to check the temperature of the connector boots as well.
