Need some help. 96 Mercury 125 HP. S/N OG197167

I was out fishing and when I started the engine and shifted into gear the engine revved up a little and shut down within a couple of seconds. I started to see a lot of smoke coming out from under the cowling.
I quickly disconnected the battery and removed the cowling to check for damage. The voltage reg. had come completely loose and was sitting on top of the top carb., all the wires to the reg. had burnt and the potting epoxy from the reg. had melted all over the place. I just purchased a new reg. and need some advise as to what may have caused the failure and also what I should check for prior to installing new regulator.

Also, I had noticed when running out from the dock that the tach. was not working and was decked out.

I really would appreciate any and all replies, thanks.

I would guess the regulator came loose and shorted out. You said it was loose on the carb. That would do it. Make sure the thing is mount firmly and torqued down with no corrosion on the connections or mount surface to block.

Dave1027,
Thanks for your speedy reply.

Yes, the VG was just sitting on top of the carb. with the 2 bolts in it.
What a mess it made, it even melted the carb. link ends and damaged the
flywheel cover.
