Busted C6 Bellhousing. Need advice.

It would appear that my only purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

We broke one of the mounting "ears" off of my C6's bellhousing today.

That so totally ruined my day.

I've been told that repairing the housing is out of the question so...

How hard is it to remove the guts from one of these things and install in a new housing?

What, if any special tools are required?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why can't you weld it? We had a Mustang torque converter come apart one time and take out the back of the block and two ears off the C6 bellhousing. Replaced the block, some old man in a little shop welded the bellhousing back, and it was still running strong 4 years later when my friend sold it.

It's aluminum and probably can be welded without tearing it all apart. It will take a person with experience but it can be done. Those ears are not under that much torque and only help keeping things together.

I checked with a few places around town and they all said that they won't touch potmetal. Said it's too weak to hold a weld. They're probably just covering their butts what with all the lawsuits these days. I'll see if the guys in the machine shop at work have any friends with a tig welder who might do it. Thanks.

Use some thin guage sheet metal and plate it....by taking the broken piece putting it in place and wrap the sheet metal over then drill the bolt hole install tighten bolt.....since it's on both sides it will hold real good until you unbolt it

Made some calls to several tranny repair places and TCI Automotive and they agree that it may can be repaired. The "may" had to do with the composition of the metal... while it is mostly aluminum it contains other ingredients such as magensium for strength. The magnesium content is the problem. If there's not much, no problem, but if there's a bunch, no can do. This was what they ment by pot metal. Hit an aluminum pot with a hammer and it dents, hit a bellhousing and it cracks but both are aluminum.

I found a machine shop a few miles from the office willing to take a shot at it for 20 bucks. Hopefully they can fix it.

Thanks.
