I may purchase a 2001 Seamaster/United Marine 2088 WA Cuddy for with 23' dual-axle trailer with hydraulic brakes for $12K. It has Volvo I/O with Chrysler V6 190 HP. Weighs 3,275 pounds. The boat looks well-maintained and survey was positive. The hull is clean looking. Minor vinyl cracking on seats/pads, but other fixtures look solid. No hour gauge on the engine but the surveyor thought low. Mechanical inspection and water test are this week.

Has anyone owned this limited production boat that has an opinion on whether or not I should buy? I will be using on Lake Erie in the Cleveland area.

Online reviews are in both camps in regards to quality. An entry-level boat where people report a) positive experience with low-end durable boat or b) take issue with Renken quality. My problem is that few people mention Seamaster/United Marine, as opposed to Renken, and there is no forum.

For a little history, until 1994, Renken Boat MFG manufactured a model called Seamaster that was a 20' WA. I believe they went out of business that year. In 1996, a company called Renken started but did not manufacture 20' WA. That same year Seamaster was founded and they must have bought design for 20' WA from Renken Boat MFG because boats are identical. Seamaster is also affiliated somehow with Sea Sport, but I do not believe they were both manufactured in the same locale. Later I believe United Marine bought Seamaster before it too went out of business.

If you are anyone you know has experience with the Seamaster/United Marine boat (1996-2004), I would appreciate hearing your opinion. I realize I could spend more, but this is my first boat and it seems like a good starter.

Okay, you've had a survey done, you're having a mechanical inspection and sea trial done. All good. They'll tell you all the important stuff.

I wouldn't worry that much about the brand. Does it look good to you? Are fittings rusting or loose? Does everything still work? If it's held together okay so far, and you take care of it, you should be okay.

Last point- Volvo Penta and Mercruiser use "marinized" GM engines. Not Chrysler. At 190 hp I'm guessing it's a 4.3 liter?

Best of luck!

It is a 4.3 liter. I will double-check the engine manufacturer and be sure its a Chevy. Thank you for your responses.
