Hi, I know this guy selling a bass boat. I love fishing and I hate to miss this one. His boat is a 1998 Pro 165. He priced for $2500 with trailer and a 40 HP motor. He said he bought it off Ebay and he doesn't have any title/papers to the boat at all. He showed the boat and I noticed the boat doesn't have any Registration on it or serial number on the motor. I mean, can I buy/make or register a new title for the boat after it is being sold to me? and do you think $2500 for a 1998 16 1/2 feet boat is worth it? Does anyone knows what's the price should fit for a 1998 Bass Tracker (Pro 165)??. It sounds like the boat is stolen but I know this guy for a long time and he had 2 boats before this one. He said he was going to register the boat but he just had a baby so he's planning to sell the boat for a cheap price.

Please advise if i should or shouldn't buy the boat. And if i should, can I buy/register a new title for the boat elsewhere?

Hi, Nick.

I'm with these guys.

I don't know where you live, but in Texas you can't register the boat without title. To get title (outboard engines also require title) you must present notarized statements of every owner back to the original owner, tracing the history.

That makes it almost impossible to legally own a previously stolen boat or outboard in Texas. Even if not stolen, the missing identification makes it an unregisterable derelict.

Check out your State's regs on this, your pal may have already run into a brick wall.

All kind of flags went up when I read this post...

First time poster, no information in his profile, asking for advice about a boat that is obviously stolen...

Paranoia? Perhapes but if you're on the level my advice is to get in contact with the police. I have a feeling someone wants their boat back...

Re: Buy Boat

Tell him you will buy it as soon as he obtains a new clear title for it and you will pay for the title cost after he gets it.

In most states you can title a boat without registering it. You only need to register it if you are going to put it it the water.

Nic, look for a serial number on the right rear of the hull usually where the hull comes together. If it's not there, It's hot. nevjb

Even though I see

RED-FLAG RED-FLAG-RED FLAG

I'm going to go against the tide here.

NicholasVo83 Explain to him your concerns that "HE" may have been taken advantage of on E-BAY and that you really want the boat and have the cash. But you need to have the boat checked out and be able to register it.
Ask him if he would sign a noterized contract with a specific date that if the boat, motor and trailer checks out by that date you will pay him the money, but he can not sell it before then. If by that date things don't check out you don't have to pay him.
NOOOOOO DEPOSIT AT ALL!! He is the one who needs to so show good faith here not you.

Nic

If this boat turns out to be stolen make sure you notify Ebay about this so the guy doesn't burn anyone else.

Re: Buy Boat

In MA you can register a boat with out a title, and changeing the numbers on a stolen boat is not that hard eaither.

I'm with Link on this one....as long as you're attempting to be honest, I think the DMV will work it out. Call first to see how to go about rectifying the problem. They're faced with this everyday...I had the same issue with a motorcycle and got assigned a new VIN, had to wait thirty days for notification of reported theft. You could have a great deal on your hands, not bad for a phone call or two and a little hassle.

Re: Buy Boat

if there is no title for the boat & trailer you will go through pure hell! if you find out what state it came from i can guarantee you the DMV wont tell you a thing about who owned it previously, so it will be all up to you find this out. been there, done that! and i got lucky, the guy i got mine from happened to still have the guys north carolina phone # after 6yrs. the boat was last registered in south carolina though.
