Looking to get a unlocked Motorola ROKR E8, to replace a dying Nokia. My provider can sell me one for $229, but on the Internet they sell from a low of $99, up to $345.

Most of these say they do not carry U.S warranties and that they are "imported" (their quotation marks, not mine). Aren't all cell phones imported?

Anyway, it would not seem to be cost effective to pay twice as much, for having probably, a 1 year warranty, as I have never had a phone quit until it had been wore out anyway.

Are ther cheap knock-off of cell phones?

Anyone purchase cell phones on line and suggest a worthy retailer?

Safe to assume that you're not eligible for a free phone upgrade from your carrier?

they are the same phones you can buy here, the only differance is that they are "unlocked", meaning they will work on any network, as long as you have a sim card that will work in it.

I go for basic functionality. I just bought a v180, NIB for 18 bucks. I have another couple coming for 30 each. The whole family has new phones for under a hundred, and the contract is still month to month and easily discardable if times get tough.

Most online companies have a contract through the carrier and also they have their own contract an example would be you have to get a certain package and hold that package for 6 months if you drop it you pay a fee. Just be careful.. Newegg.com and letstalk.com are pretty legit..

I bought one from ebay and all the manuals and stuff were in spanish (I think). No big deal as you can just download the english version. That's probably what "imported" means. I say go for it.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

The main reason for the Rokr, is that it has a really nice MP3 player and uses a standard headphone jack.

It's a gift for my son, that he can listen to music while working out. found one at newegg.com for $119 free shipping. Downloaded the english manual from Motorola site.
