What the chances that this 20 year old engine that is still in the box will start and not need any work done? Are there certain things a person should do prior to fueling and starting? 50:1 mix I assume? Follow the break in instructions is always a good idea.
thanks

If it were mine and still in the box, I would spray some fuel mix at 50:1 into the sparkplug holes and slowly turn it over using the flywheel to get some lube to the rings and walls, change the impeller and give it a try.

Do you have the s/n?

I would spray a 50/50 mix of antifreeze/water into the water intake, when first cranking it up, hoping if the impellers at all stuck, it will help free it up. Then on the muffs with a hose before starting.

if its new and in the box, chances are pretty good that it will fire.

I would count on a new impeller just due to age. and probably need to run it for a while to break it in.

I am not sure what you mean by your last sentence.

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 5 H.P. (1996 ))
Serial No: 0D997262 Model No: 1005201SK

Parts List for model 1005201SK:

4/5 H.P. (MARINER, MERCURY) - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

Fuel tank mounted to engine, see under FUEL TANK (SERIAL GROUP #1)

If you are not going to change the impeller before you start it, just rotate the flywheel and you will turn the impeller at the same time.

I am not sure what you mean by your last sentence.

Ear muff type of clamp for the lower unit, that lets you hook up a garden hose to it,,, sold at most any marine supply.

Aw, Heck, just throw yours in a 1/2 filled 55gal drum of water to run it, and keep the impeller wet.
