buying a motor today...question

so I'm (most likely) buying a 1985 johnson 60hp outboard today.

But my boat (89 bayliner capri) won't be with me when I go see it. I've never bought a motor separate like this before.

so my question is this...will it definitely fit on my boat? are most transom pretty standar in shape? (it's a bayliner which is a pretty damn standard boat, I would assume)

You are most likely going to be fine. However there are long and short shaft motors and long and short transoms. Measure your boat from the top of the transom to the bottom of the keel and then measure the new motor from the top of the mounting bracket to the a/v plate to make sure it till fit. Again you'll probably be fine though. Worst case is the mounting holes won't like up and you'll have to drill new ones. Fill the old ones with 5200.

thanks. I know that our old crapped out force was a long shaft, as is this one.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.
