I´ve been offered a 115 Hp Chrysler outboard, T&T i think i can negociate to a reasonable price.

Seller advises it to be 1979, its been sitting for 10 years, indoor, due to some ignition problems. compression seems to be VERY fine, and i will check lower unit. Are these engines as much trouble as their rep. says ? Is it true it has basicly beltdriven automotive ignition ?

Are parts still available ?

Is there anything else to look for.

Re: Buying Chrysler 115

I wouldnt buy a Chrysler as an everyday motor.
I feel that parts are just too hard to find
and Ill bet pretty pricey.I would guess reliability is at best fair.
It appears that motors 35 and up share some parts.
My info only goes to 73 but it appears that
3 and 4 cylinder motors share the same bore and stroke and possibly the same ignition parts.I
believe your discription of the ignition is correct.Merc used a similar system succesfully for some years.
I think the system works ok the problem is parts.
And I believe it requires special tools to retime.
Im guessing caps and rotors are hard to come by.
My manual shows many Chryslers share the
Tillotson wb Carb With changes in jets and number of carbs.
I bet tilt and trim parts are impossible to find.
It would be fun to try to save an old Chrysler but I dont think pratical.
I think I would do a complete search for parts
before before buying.

Check if parts is available:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/select_models2.asp?type_id=CHRY

http://www.dolleroffshore.com/parts.cfm

http://outboardparts.com/chrysler/chryslerforce/chryslerforcewelcomepage.htm

To order parts, you can also try Marinshopen in Sweden:
http://www.marinshopen.se/

For troubleshooting help later:
http://outboardparts.com/chrysler/miscellaneous/troubleshootinghelp.htm

You can also do a search in this section for:
chrysler parts www

Hope it helps.
