Does anyone know what would be involved if I buy a boat in the US and bring it to Canada? I'd have to register it I'm sure but does anyone know everything you need to do?

thanks

Re: Buying in US and bringing to Canada

My dad did this a few years ago.
Although he still lives in the US, he leaves this boat in Ontario.
Bought boat.
Registered it in US, you may not have to do this, but dad needed to, to get the state to issue a title.
Took boat, receipts, title, and registration papers to Canada, reported intentions to Canadian Customs officials at the border.
Paid duty (tax) on the boat, get a receipt!!.
Registered boat in Canada.

Re: Buying in US and bringing to Canada

Great info. Boston2

I understand I'd have to pay the pst and gst on the value of the boat. How did they come up with a canadian value? I know you can dispute these if you don't agree. Good idea on the trailer, I will do that, cheaper too since I can buy a boat without a trailer.
Did you have to pay any tariffs?
thx

If the boat was built outside North America, duty may be applied as well (I think its 9%).
GST is paid at customs based on declared value (at border), and PST is paid at the ships registry when you transfer ownership.
Good Luck

Alright,

Thanks, I think this is all the info I need. Now to find a boat fairly close to home so I don't travel 3000 miles to get it. ;)

the form customs fills out is casual goods accounting document .you pay the gst and the pst to them then they do your pleasure craft licence,or pay pst later and register later.the value is based on your bill of sale ,if its low they may use nada US value and convert to cnd.canada customs has web site do a search on determining value..scott
