Buying new pistons

I have a few questions about buying new pistons. I am in the middle of rebuilding my 72 Johnson 6HP. The old pistons were scored, so they are getting replaced.

1. Can I re-use the wrist pins? The originals look fine, no scratches or scuffs.

2. When I order pistons, do they typically come with a set of rings, or do I have to order them separately?

3. Do new pistons come with the little wrist pin clips?

Re: Buying new pistons

If you buy them here (Iboats), you'll get the piston, rings, wrist pin, and wrist pin clips. How do the cylinder walls look? I'm thinking if the pistons had scoring on them, so do the cylinder walls.

Re: Buying new pistons

Unfortunatly, they are not available here at iBoats (OMC 376994).

Believe it or not, the cylinder walls are not scored at all. No aluminum transfer either. There is a slight bit of surface rust(that is what it looks like), that feels smooth. The original cross hatch is still visible, and the bores measure out to specification as well. I am going to do a very light hone job on them anyway for the new pistons and rings.

Here's a thread with photos of the cylinders:

Just curious, why are you replacing the pistons if the cyl bores are good ?

Never mind, I just read your thread again. You could try Wiseco Pistons. com, they may have something.

Good source for pistons. They smallest pistons they make are for the 9.9/15 HP series though.

I have a few sources where I can get pistons, like SeaWay or boats net. I am just not sure if it's the pistons alone, and I need to buy the rings and wrist pin clip seperate, or if they normally come boxed with the pistons.

Sea-Way, Shop.Evinrude.com and boats.net sell OEM parts and you may have to order parts seperately. OMC pistons came with/without wrist pin, clips and ring depending on model. Ask before you order.....

I just looked on Shop Evinrude.com and it looks like they have the the std pistons and rings but no over size. Check the site out, looks like everything is sold seperatley.
