Buying old Merc 800

I was offered an old Merc 800 today at a very low price. Seller says motor is OK, but motor bracket is damaged. Will bracket from other Mercs fit ?? None T/T. The motor has a red stribe on hood/cowling. Does anyone know whereabout the vintage can bee ? It is a 4 cyl.

I had another offer on a Merc 850 - has Mercury Racing on Hood. Asking price 350 $ with bad lower unit ( reverse not working ) Will the L/O from the 800 do ?

I know a guy that specializes in these. He repaired an 850 for me. Is the compression good and how else is the engine. I liked it and the electronics but I had to have tilt and trim for my application and sold mine. The 800 is really an old technology motor with an ignition system using a distriutor. I would definitely go for the 850 and repair it if problems can be easily solved. Let me know and I will pass along his telephone number. He can answer your lower end question. Look up the years from the serial numbers here on this site or use a NAPA catalog for this same info.

g'day G DANE <br /><br />I've got an 800 merc it;s a 71 but they go from 1969 through to 1972 and than I think they went to 850's these arnt much different they changed the eletrics in 1976 <br /><br />the older ones pre 76 had the older type 111 thunderbolt c.d ignition whitch where pointless(no points) than they whent to one coil per pot in the 850s(80hp 85hp or 90hp)<br /><br />chers Daryl
