Wasn't sure were to put this question so if not in the right place please move it to the proper one.

We, and really mean the wife would like to re-power the boat with a bigger engine.(like her daddy had on his 24 fter.) I have read about how on a pontoon you don't get the big increase due to displacement vs cutting through the water. If we were on the Weeki Wachee or more lakes probably stay with it but she likes the Gulf so... (I rather get another jet ski but some how end up losing all the time).
I am interested in tips and advice on what to look for and what I need to know to make a good buying decision.
The boat now has a Mercury but its a 2002 and the boat a 1998 so not sure if that is the original engine make. I know I need to measure the transom for shaft length.

If I get a used engine will the current wiring harness work ? Or will a new one be needed if it doesn't come with it ?

What tell tale signs should I look for that say RUN DON"T WALK AWAY form a engine ?

If the engine came off a smaller boat or even a different type will the prop need to be replaced ? Or is the prop matched to the engine specifically ?

Certain engines to stay away from ? I see alot of 1990's for sale. Too old ?
Any advice and tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Re: buying used boat motor

Watch the transom max HP limits and yes it will more than likely have to be re propped and normally its a long shaft at 20 inches for a pontoon.
