I have a 1978 Mariner 80 HP outboard. I replaced all of the electrical on the motor. Can someone tell me how to crank the motor without using the ignition switch. I want to make sure it at least turns over before putting it back together and if it doesn't I know it's not the ignition. Thanks for your help.

Billy

What do you mean "put it back together". If all you took apart was the ignition components, then all you should have to put back together is the ignition. So you mine as well hook the ignition switch. But... All you have to do is jump the starting solenoid with a screwdirver or some other suitable jumper.

Re: Bypassing ignition switch?

I replaced the stator, trigger, wire harness, etc. I also removed the external harness. I still have to get control cables so I don't want to put the ignition harness back in the control box yet. What I was asking is can I hook up a battery directly to the starter to see if it will turn over. If so, which post. My starter has a large yellow, which I assume is positive and a large black, which I assume is negative. Would I just hook up negative battery terminal to black and positive battery terminal to yellow or do I go to the solenoid?

The easiest way is to connect a jumper across the solenoid.
Or you can connect the battery straight to the starter but this usually means disconnecting the battery and locating it nearer the engine. Depends on your set-up.

Can't you take the top cowl off and turn it over with a rope?
