Hey guys. I read most of the topics regauding bypassing the trim tilt switch. I have the merc 5.0 alpha one. The up toggle will not work, but the down toggle and the trailer buttons work fine. Which wires do I need to splice together to bypass the trim limit switch? Are these wires on the trim tilt pump? Im going on vacation soon and want to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated. Thx John

Since the trailering button works this tells me you have a problem with your wiring or the trim limit switch itself. Dont know your year model, But if its older than ten years,My bet is the wiring is rotten to the trim limit sendor. Kick the outdrive over to the starboard side and look up into the gimble housing. Look for black lampcord type wire. Is the insolation missing in places? Another thing you can do is to look inside the boat at the transom where these wires come into the boat. Look for the bullet connectors where these wire come in. Unplug these wires and plug them into themselves. Your trim should now work.

If I tell you how to bypass the trim limit switch, and you go on vacation and damage your drive ,I will feel guilty.
Why its called trim limit is just that.
Please don't bypass it.
DHP
PS leave the drive fully down,do vacation, get it fixed properly.

I think I can get by using the down toggle and the trailer button. Thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I would not know what wires to plug into each other anyway. I would guess the blue and the green wire

Re: Bypassing trim tilt limiting switch

jb, it might be easier to do the wiring at the buttons. i have the 3 button cluster mounted on the dash. according to the seloc manual, you have a red wire running to the in button and to the up/out button. there is also a wire from the up/out to the trailer button. you need to add a wire from either of the red wire terminals to the terminal that the wire from the up/out button to the trailer button is attached to (confused yet?) this will give you power at the trailer button without pushing the up/out button. using the trailer button will bypass the up/out button and the limit switch. you can use 1 button for trim instead of two. BUT, be careful in how high you raise the unit while running. you will have to go by 'feel' to set the outdrive. if you go too high, your next post will be 'how do i replace drive u-joints?' we are not responsible for any damage this mod may cause.

Johnboy, On the trim pump harness, within 1 foot of the pump itself, the two wires from the tilt limit switch pulg in, next to each other. Make a short jumper with bullet connectors, and it will bypass the trim limit switch. I have been told that id you trim up the drive too much, it will ventilate before it runs short on cooling water.

It is not a question about lack of cooling water or ventilation. Like DPH said it's about safety. If you trim up to far the drive isn't supported by the gimble ring and it WILL make junk!!

The question was...... Im going on vacation soon and want to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated. Thx John

All I said was to bypass so he could go to the lake......Guess I will just shut up!!!

If you remember?? The first outdrives never had trim limits. And they made it. Well most of them. Im just "Thinking some boaters" have common since. You never try to go under power with the drive up over ten percent.

Look at all the posts on "My trim gage quit working" Their are more outdrives out their without trim gages than with them..... How do they do it? They listen... Learn and are still boating. I dont know DHP.....But I respect him. He does this all day for a living. I agree. But I was just trying to help a guy go boating for the weekend. Maybe Im too short with my answers? If im wrong tell me..... ? I can take a hint!
