"Urgent, help please" is not an effective way to GET help.<br />These guys and gals are looking for specific problems and clicking the ones they might know about.<br />So you need to repost your problem and put in a new Topic that spells out what is wrong.<br />Something like "My 165/3.7lt Mercruiser went clunk and won't engage gears"<br />Welcome aboard... have fun solving the problem.... and remember we need details!

Re: C

Perhaps the shift linkage unhooked or became poorly adjusted. The clicking was the clutch dog just barely making contact with the gears(and rapidly wearing down). The clunk? Maybe piece broke off and jammed the gears momentaraly and then dislogded. Another choice might be broken coupler/flexplate. Or one of the u-joints let go

Kinda like saying "My motor isn't working." Specific is good. Unfortunately I think your drive is toast. How'd you check your gearlube out in the water?

Re: C

My "clicking" noise last year wound up being some gears in the lower unit. Mine never locked up or quit propelling the boat.<br /><br />DougV>

Re: C

I've got what sounds like the same problem(posted earlier this week). I never had any problems getting into or out of gear, but I'm sure that had I not headed back to the ramp I would have.<br /><br />Anyway, I removed the top cover and found that the bearing immediatly under this cover was chewed up pretty bad. I ordered a service manual, which seems to be a neccesity if you want to understand what's in there. Amazon has one for about $25 and there is a link above for about $30.

Re: C

Outdrives are not normally a backyarder thing. The gears and such have shims in them that are down to the thousandths. Ask your marina and fellow boaters for a local shop to take it to. It all depends on how much damage (have to see it to tell) on weather or not it can be fixed or if you will have to replace the top end. Most backyarders can take a drive off and reinstall. Save some money and time by doing it. Also a drive that is already off will probably get fixed before a drive that is still on a boat (especially on a rainy day).

May think about picking up one of the drives advertised at the top of the page. they are less money than a rebuild on you current drive..just a thought......good luck
