1985 70 HP Evinrude.
I was able to finally get my steering ram loose, cleaned up and moving freely.
I would now like to install cable buddy. But I cannot understand how this nut with grease fitting that goes on to starboard side of steering tube will lube the inside of ram? Can someone explain??

thanks

Re: Cable Buddy

I guess you have a point. Drilling a hole in the pivot tube with the nut to lube the cable accesses the cable than it does the steering rod into the tube. Consider a nut on the port side to get direct access to lube the rod.

Now for the next question. The nut for the port side comes with two options - a grease zerk fittin or a threaded plug. That allows you to choose between greasing the rod or using Maxi-Lube. Which is better?

I'm leaning toward the grease zerk and using lithium grease. My neighbor has been using this method for ten years on his boat with no problems at all.

Re: Cable Buddy

that device raises the question whether the better risk is air drying against the possibility of trapped water/moisture inside the tube. Seems unlikley to be completely waterproof, and will collect condensation in the sun. So for me, keeping the boat outside uncovered year round in salt water, I might pass.
I also don't think I'll be drilling any holes for that reason.
I used to turn my wheel so the arm was inside when moored but now I do the opposite, on the theory that it is better for the stainess to dry. Also when it gets stuck it's easier to tap it in than pull it out!
I use the "widget" but understand as you said it's for wiping not for lubing.
