i removed the shift cable, and with the engine running, it doesnt easily go into forward gear.

it can be pulled into forward manually with 1 hand, but is 'bouncy' and needs a few tries to get it to pop into forward.

taking it out of gear, its flings back right through neutral, and goes into reverse.

from neutral it can be triggered and will move itself to reverse.
it really likes to be in reverse.

is the lower end toast?

to clarify my symptoms:

with cable disconnected,

-from neutral it is very easy to shift to reverse.
-from neutral it is difficult to shift to forward - it clicks and fights back hard, like the shift rod is twisting instead of moving lower end parts.

Sounds normal to me... The dog clutch spring is working correctly...

And that's why we have control boxes... They were not designed to be moved by hand, without a control box... Not a valid test....

ok so my diagnosis of a bad cable is hopefully on the right path.

with everything connected, and no sharp corners, the cable will hardly budge. i was afraid to break the plastic handle, i was pushing so hard.

with the cable disconnected at both ends, its very difficult to move, but it does if you try really hard.

An open cable (not connected at either end) should be able to be slid with a thumb and forefinger...
