Cable Steering question.

Hi all I have a 1962 Dorsett 14 footer and the old cable for the steering was shot so I bought 25 feet of vinyl covered cable thinking that would be enough. We got 1 wrap around the steering wheel pulley each direction and there is not
enough steering for sharp stuff, so my question is if I got a longer piece of cable say so as to get at least 3 complete wraps around the steering wheel pulleys will that give me more steering? And is there a set length for the cable on a 14 ft.
boat?
Thanks Dave W.

Re: Cable Steering question.

My advice would be to use some clothesline or carpenter's string to measure with then, get the cable. Be sure to inspect the pulleys and springs too.

Re: Cable Steering question.

you will need a few wraps around the wheel end to get any decent steering. as Bob mentioned, clothesline, nylon rope, string, etc.

best to order long and cut to need than have too short.

Re: Cable Steering question.

the clothesline is for getting a length, not for actually steering the boat.
