Cable steering with dual helms

I have a Tiara 2500 Sport Salon with dual helms that originally had hydraulic steering. Can I set up dual helms to work with two sets of cable steering? All of the hydraulic componants are gone. I am assuming that if I did set up "dual cables" I would have to fabricate something at the transom assembly and on the outdrive arm to accomodate this. Thanks all.

What kind of steering is in the boat at present?

The hydraulic hoses are still in the boat but none of the componants are there. So, basically the boat does not have steering currently.

Re: Cable steering with dual helms

I know it is more costly to go back with hydraulics. I just replaced my cable with hydraulics. All that would be needed would be 2 pumps, they connect to your steering wheel, the hoses you already have, and a hydraulic cylinder that will attach to you I/O. Since it was hydraulic the connection should still be there. I paid about $800 for the system, that was only 1 pump, but that was for a 34’ boat. You would use smaller pumps so you could get away for about $1000. Good chunk of change, but it would surely simplify installation. The though of running a cable from the bridge to the stern is not pleasant.

I agree with scamper that straight hydraulic is the ONLY way to fly however if cable is what you like best, follow snapperbaits link for setup and parts information.

I have dual stations - straight hydraulic on my 24 Searay, matter of fact I just added the second (inside cabin) station a couple weeks ago.

Did the job myself, after consulting with some Seastar Tech guys directly.

Just came in from Block Island Monday in 7 to 9 foot windy seas, and the boat handled beautiful. No pain, no strain on the wheel at all. You could actually let go even in rough seas like we were in. I couldn't beleive how nice it was to steer.

How long are the hydraulic lines you have still in the boat and what kind are they?

There should be writing on them that says either Seastar or Syten in white letters.

Let me know when you get a chance if you don't mind.

My email address is in my Profile.

Take care,
PB

Re: Cable steering with dual helms

One of the main reasons I am considering installing cable steering and not buying 2 helm pumps and a cylinder is cost. The set I spec'd out will set me back $1200 for hydraulic. On the other hand, I have access to unlimited cable steering setups at no cost to me. Unfortunatly they are not set up like snapperbaits link to Teleflex(which is the proper way). I was hoping to run individual cables from each helm to the transom assembly and connecting them both there. I do know with cable steering if you move the outdrive by hand the steering wheel should spin. So I was hoping this would work. Any ideas on this?

Re: Cable steering with dual helms

Hi CaptMick.

My 26' Skiff Craft has a dual cable steering setup that would agree with your intended plan.

The lower station is routed on the starboard side and the fly bridge station is routed on the port side. The lower station is hooked up like any single station cable rig would be. The fly bridge station cable is coupled into the "free end" of stern drive linkage arrangement with a little hardware and a ball link. What you end up with is like a closed loop of cabling.

My boat's 30 years old and the steering works fine if you keep everything tight, lubed and properly adjusted.

I realize my explaination of this setup is pretty vague and probably a bit hard to visualize. if you're interested in seeing what it actually looks like, I could snap some digital pics and email them to you.

Regards, crt.

Thanks a bunch CRT. I didn't know if this set-up had been installed and what you have going there is what I am shooting for. Pics would probably help me a bit.

mcasteel@tampabay.rr.com
