Been reading alot on here about the pump problems. Where is the cheapest place to get a calco replacement pump? The bad thing is, i dont know if the rams are any good either since this pump has been tore down by previous owner and not put back together.
Thanks for any help you all may have - jody

Contact the iboats sales staff - there is a service company that can rebuild the Calco pump.

The best way to fix a Calco is with a 10lb sledge hammer. After it is sufficiently fixed then go out and buy a Prestolite. A used stringer pump works ($100ish). You can also use a brand new Volvo AQ290 pump ($200ish) with a mounting adapter. Either way, the best place for a calco is bottom of the ocean.

Probably right, but back in the day the Calco pump was considered to be superior to the Prestolite. The fact that repair parts are unavailable and that the rebuild is expensive does not negate the superior quality of the pump.

sometimes a square wheel with advanced ride stabilizers doesn't work out in the long run. There is a simple and lasting beauty in having round tires. Not to knock J/E. I think mercury is probably the king of square tire engineering.

Is the pump the problem, or the electric motor? If the pump is all back together, and the unit has oil, turn the pump with a cordless drill, or screwdriver. That will tell you if the unit work's without spending alot of money. If need be, to save money, fill with automatic transmission fluid. I do have to agree with RRitt on this unit, though I would use a wooden stake through iit's little mechanical heart first.

mr johnson, the answer to your question is: I dont know..... Is the motor inside the reservoir?? The previous owner had the 4" round, 10" long part that has electrical wiring going into it, apart. Said it needed replaced. Is that the motor or the pump??

The motor and pump are matched to each other. Your Calco pump will not fit anything except a Calco motor. The most universally under-priced OMC to fit your boat is found at junkyards, craigslist, and Ebay as an "OMC Stringer Trim Pump". For $100ish you can find a decent used pump with both motor and valve body. After a few years something might wear out you should be able to find new replacement parts here on iboats for very affordable prices. Life expectancy on a prestolite is 20-25 years with oil and 13-17 with ATF.

RRiit: Where did you get those figures'? ATf is red. What if I used red Johnson oil in my Evenrude? What if I used blue Evenrude oil in my Johnson? What if I used the wrong food coloring in potato salad?

The Prestolite pumps are fairly universally available but the required base is not. You would need to find the base to make it work initially. The base is called a "valve body and gearcase assembly" part #0172,857.

The Volvo pump is an adaptation on which RRitt is working.

What youre saying sounds like I could just grab a prestolite pump and base(valve body) and ditch the calco?? Could it really be that simple? Or would the hydraulic lines not work/match up, wiring, etc.

I have rebuilt hundreds of trim systems from just about everybody. The rubber in ATF systems turns hard and cracks. The rubber in oil systems does not. The best example is mercury. USMarine used oil. When mercury acquired Force they started using ATF. The exact same system from USMarine lasted 5-8 years longer than from mercury. Now I am seeing same thing with Mariner. the '89 mariners are starting to come in for repairs. They had oil. The 96 mercs are also seeing a spike in repair. Same system. Merc had ATF. The prestolite valve bodies used in Johnson-Evinrude aren't so clear cut. A lot of them do not use rubber seals and don't much care what the fluid is. And then the dual ram system (like with calco) had a lot of square inches and not too much horsepower. It is a low psi design that extends the life of rubber more than a typical trim/tilt.

oh - hydraulic oil is different from atf. you can't just add red food coloring to hydraulic oil and turn it into ATF. Hydraulic oil is an engineered product. Why not just put vegetable oil in your two stroke gas?

yup. just that simple. It may be difficult finding them apart. Most junkyards will want to sell you the whole unit. You may also need to swing by NAPA and buy one or two adapters (the brass brake fittings aisle).

Nothing on that PT&T or the complete unit will work on your system or motor.

$79
bolt on replacement including both motor, reservoir, and valve body.
The motor will last forever if you don't let rust start on inside.
Valve body due for rebuild soon but that's an under $150 fix.
Throw Calco in trash.
Good riddance to bad engineering. Rotary hydraulic pump was just nonsense anyway. Square tires and all that.

I don't see any current listings for same pump. Maybe you can email the guy and ask him if he has more. Or search craigslist. or wait a few days. or ask around here. (if it was me ... i would take a printout of $79 ebay to a local boat junkyard and ask the guy if he had any just like this one for $79 on ebay. The junkyard guy will know right off that he needs to compete with a clean freshwater part for around $80).
