Calling all airbrush artist...

After getting the idea of building my own lures, I got the idea of buying me an airbrush to paint them with and use for other projects. I bought a Paasche dual action airbrush for $79.99 on sale. From what I've read on the internet Paasche is one of the best airbrushes, hopefully it will hold up to it's reputation.

Here are the questions being a first timer to airbrushes...

I didn't buy the compressor for the airbrush but I can regulate how much air comes out of the big air compressor I have access to, I just got to find a way to adapt the airbrush hose to it which shouldn't be hard..

Would it be safe/alright to use a big air compressor capable of handling 135 PSI? As I mentioned I can regulate the PSI coming out of the compressor.

What type of paint have you used in these airbrushes? The book says I can use just about any paint but the person at the hobby place says no you can't .

I bought a very small pressure regulator at harbor freight. I basically put it inbetween the main hose and the small hose that goes to the air brush.

I can literally see the guage drop (like it is supposed to) on the PSI on the big compressor while I crank the knob down on the regulater. I got it down to 40 PSI just to see what it would be like on an air gun and I could tell a big difference in the pressure of coarse. I plan on putting a splitter adapter on the compressor so I can put both hoses on it (the regular hose then the airbrush hose).

So you obviously use a big compressor for your airbrush and bought a small regulater for it. Is it the only regulater on the compressor?

I just don't want to blow this brand new airbrush up or clog it with the wrong paint.

There is a reg on the compressor but I have it cranked up to the max.

You can use any paint that you want, you will have to experiment with thinning each type to make it spray like you want. You can use your big compressor with a good regulator. Look in your paperwork that came with your air brush to see what your preasure should be.

Sorry for the late reply. I read the book on the airbrush just after I got it and it says it will handle up to 75psi for the thickest paint. Normal use is around 40 psi. I have painted with it already and it does do good, just got to learn how to do the fine spots and other stuff with it. After I get through with the airbrush I clean it by running thinner through it, and I have also used rubbing alcohol.

I've seen cans of air sold for use with those. For what little volume of paint you'll be spraying, that might work if the compressor doesn't work out. They're sold in craft stores right next to the air brushes.

I'll half to look for that the next time I'm out for supplies. So far the compressor is working out well, but the can of air would be good for portable use.

Just a note,

Use the shortest possible hose you can coming from the air compressor to the air brush. You'll get significantly less water that way.

Also make sure your not using an auto oiler on your compressor for air tools.
