Calling all computer people.....help!!!

I had an icon on my desktop to a photo I was attaching to an email. I'd forgotten I was attaching it and my shredder program hit the file at the same time. The result was an icon on the desktop that has no file associated with it, yet when you try to delete it all it does is bring up the error "cannot read from the source file or disk". I can't do anything, I can't drag it to the recycle bin, or the same error comes up. It seems this icon is now permanent, with nothing associated with it.

How do I get rid of it?

UPDATE: The computer finally deleted the icon on its own.
