Howdy Rangers! or (Fish cops) as known otherwise,I have been boating for 20yrs now and i only see you drive by,i was hoping maybe we could have a few of you good old boys pop in here and tell stories and give us some safety advice or so on!This might seem strange at first but it will be great if you old boys step in.( Where you at fish cop, where you at?)

Re: calling all DOW rangers!(fish cops)

I know in my region the Ranger is a very busy officer of the law. There is so much of an area for him to cover in enforcement plus the appearances at schools and other social functions. With having such a load on his shoulders, I can understand why his free time is spent with his family. I don't know about other regions and states, but I know the one in my area is a very busy officer.

In Ohio, we need more enforcement plain and simple.

In Ohio DNR officers (gamewardens) each cover one county. Then you have DNR watercraft officers, they are out of regional offices. I can still remember the one named Ramsey that covered Hancock county when I was 15 before my 16th birthday but was close enough to have already have birth certificate to get my DL, he agrgued that I needed a FL (was 6'4" at the time) that wasn't reqired till 16. After 1/2 hour of this told him write a ticket, and would settle in court. He walked away with tail between legs. Now when they stop me on the lake they just ask to see FL from 20' away.

I got to talking to a warden yesterday at the tire shop. Her chief had her take his state rig in. We are so strapped for cash here, we have to send lieutenants to the tire shop, instead of captains :D

I've only had encounters with them on the water, but they've all been pleasant. On one occasion my buddy was fishing with an out of date license and trout stamp. It was an honest mistake. He was straight with the warden about it and the warden let him slide since he told him the truth. Another time I was stopped for a routine license check in a boat that didn't have any registration numbers on it. I know. It was years ago and I was young and dumb and had somehow gotten the impression that john boats with small outboards didn't need to be registered. He actually said he was sorry as he was writing the ticket, and I could tell he meant it, but he just couldn't let that one go.

Until they (FOP) want people to have concealed carry why would GOOD, LAW ABIDING OHIOANS really want to help any law enforcement. I have never commited a crime, and don't plan on it anytime soon but they look to make people who like me follow the law to be a bad guy. I have take a safe boating classthat I was not required to, will observe the laws but hey just won't help these people out. They really just a PIA most of the time to most people, they have had numorus complaints about wave runners running our swim area but do nothing.

Nope, not all. Just know my local officer from the lake I frequent. Our local radio station will have him on and he will tell what lakes the fish are hitting. His hint to me, that is the lakes he will be at to do his job.

Re: calling all DOW rangers!(fish cops)

What do you specifically want to know about? I don't advertise it much, because it's only a part time gig, but I'm involved in the water patrol in my conunty. Not with the DNR, but the sheriff's office. DNR guy has a huge territory and checking fishing licenses is one of many duties he performs.
Most LE aren't a very open group of people- other than with other LE. You really have to get to know them and gain their trust and respect before you get much out of them. I've seen all sorts of idiocy on our local lakes, one imparticular is very popular and crowded in the summer. We're mostly about saftey- typical duties are stopping violators who are operating recklessly- blowing thru no wake zones, pontoon boats using docking lights as headlites at night, jet skis operating after dark, watching for BUI's. Typical stop would involve checking registration, life jacket/preserver count, horn works, fire extinguisher charged at reachable, stuff like that. Typically we issue warnings to first timers unless they're really blatant violators or operating very recklessly. And trying to keep the drunks from operating watercraft that's really challenging on water- field sobriety test on a boat. We deal with rude, obnoxious people, body recovery (boat crashes, drownings, etc.), all while trying to protect everyone and not get injured while on duty. It's a rather thankless job sometimes, so it's easier just to keep quiet than id yourself as a cop and have everyone complain about getting cited for speeding and how horrible their encounters with the law have been. Kinda like a doctor at a party- everyone comes up and asks them about all their aches and pains.
Starting to get the picture of why now? I do have many stories and have seen some pretty scary stuff, and a lot of extremely funny stuff. Ask me about naked guy some day.

Re: calling all DOW rangers!(fish cops)

Short version of naked guy- getting reports from numerous people that a guy- adult male, early 60's in age, was walking around near shore, on his lot, not a stich of clothes on. He's a property owner so he knows the patrol boat from way off and can dodge us. Finally, on Fathers Day weekend (very busy) he's prancing around even waving to boats full of families- little kids, etc...
We get tons of calls on the guy so we beach the boat a few hundred yards up shore and slowly walk the shoreline, heavy tree cover and surprise the guy. He gets up and runs into the woods. But we saw what we needed to see (yuck) and he came back out with trunks on and a towel, but we were able to write him up. Not sure what he was thinking. He just went to court, and somehow gets acquitted. Go figure. But he knows were keeping an eye on him so if he's going commando, it's after dark. Hopefully.
No kids should have to see that.

There are bad apples in all jobs or trades LEOs included, and I've met some. I still have great respect for ALL LEOs. It doesnt pay enough for what they do,and it is dangerous and theres the dealing w the guy who should go to jail but he's not technically guilty of anything yet. I can see how LEOs may become jaded or defensive towards the public. IMO 20 years ago or more LEOs were all more friendly or easygoing, not so much crime and bad guys everywhere like now. They cannot be too friendly or let their guard down as much as before because of our current society. Thats sad, but I understand why, and thankyou ALL for what you do, lots of us do appreciate it.:)

I can understand the fact, that coming out into the open brings strange things upon them. Thanks for talking to us.I have been boating here on lake mead for 20yrs now and have seen many funny and sad things, even watched and listened to a girl who had just lost here man by drowning, thats a cry of horror that i will never get out of my mind.I was always a fun boated that took risks like cliff jumping and drinking beers while fishing off my bass boat.I know many people drink beer here while driving there boats and i usually get to the launch ramp after dark during summer because of the heat.I noticed that we have no patrol boats after dark cruising mead, that would be dangerous i know, but drunk boaters show up at the ramp from both directions at night and go there way.and i am sure everyonw will agree that citing and catching these litter bugs more often would be appreciated by all, especially the ones who drive to the beach side in the cars and party then leave all junk next to there fire pit.I have to go eat breakfast now, talk to you later

Yeah, that's certainly true. Some get into the profession for the wrong reasons. Most of them get filtered out in the interview process, but you'll never eliminate it all. Best advice I can give when you're stopped is to remain professional and calm, and cooperate. But don't give away your rights. Being polite and keeping safety in mind goes a long way. And despite the rumors to the contrary, there are not any "quotas" we have to fill for writing tickets. The ticketing agency (at least here in MN) does't get the fine, most of it goes to the state. So we have no financial incentives to ticket. Ticket vs warning is strictly at our discretion. We try to educate first. Surprisingly many don't have a clue as to the watercraft laws. The object is to change behavior so we can be safer- some may react to a talking to, others may need the sting of a fine.
I'll give most the benefit of a doubt on a first encounter, but won't be so forgiving if I see the same person violating the next weekend.
