I received the following email from BassPro Shops on my 2002 Mercury 125 hp. Yeah, it scares me! Has anyone had these problems? I'm thinking of trading for a 150XR6.

. Not to scare you,
because it's not a HUGE problem, but the 125 has had some problems. It
runs on the 4 cylinders but will use 3 until the fourth is needed.
Sometimes it will not use the fourth even when needed. This will cause you
not only to lose power from time to time but also will eat up a larger
amount of gas. What kind of boat are you putting this on? The motor size
could make a huge difference if you are using the boat for things other
than fishing (skiing, tubing, etc.). Hope this helps.

It's no secret or cause for concern that it drops a cylinder at low RPM's. It makes it run a bit rough at idle, but I know several people who own the Merc. 125 Classic and Saltwater with no issues whatsoever. I'd like to know what solicited this comment. Did you ask him for advice, or was it just a random message?

I saw a post somewhere about low motor prices. So I inquired about the price of a Merc. 150 EFI. I asked for their comments on the 125 Classsic. Then the email came a couple of days ago.

Sounds like someone has a quota to meet on the 150 EFI's. The 125 Classics (carbed) are, from what I understand, some of the best motors Merc has ever put out. Maybe I heard wrong though.

OK, it's called "2+2" and it means the motor idles on the top two cylinders up to approx. 1800 to 2000 rpms. There are no idle circuits on the two bottom carbs. Then an accelerator pump helps make that transition from 2 cylinders to 4. At no time do "three" cylinders or "dropping one", come into play.!! It's true that the 115, 125 and the "not made anymore" 100 hps are not the most smoothest idling motors on the market but they do give you good power for the buck!!Most people don't know about these features and would not know if not told.

If you want to not use the "2+2" just order another set of the top carbs and replace the two bottom carbs with two top carbs, that way all four will have idle jets and will run on all four all the time.

Craig
