Hey guys, i need some input on a motor. I'm looking at possibly buying a 1998 Yamaha 15hp. The owner says it's a 15x model but i can't find anything on it. It's a short shaft 2 stroke. He wants $1300 US for it with the tank and hose. I haven't seen it in person yet, but the pics look ok. Is that a decent price or is it high? Also, it's been used in salt water a few times and probably has 30 or so hours on it but i can't tell. Are there any indicators i can look for when i'm trying to determine hours used? I was thinking about the prop having paint missing. Also, is this a good motor? Any known problems i should look out for? I appreciate the help guys.[attachment=img=yamaha 15hp 1989]

One other thing i need to know guys. The owner says that it's a short shaft but Yamaha's version of a short shaft is 17". Is this true? I need a 15" short shaft like my 2006 mercury 15hp i sold.

Your pic doesn't show .... these are great motors ..... if that motor was well maintained and flushed after every use in saltwater it should be perfect .... and as good as new with only 30 hours on it .... the price is slightly high ... but if it is spotless the price isn't too bad ......

Hey guys, what would a healthy compression be on both cylinders on a 15 horse 2 stroke such as this. The owner says it's 150psi right now. Is that good? Thanks

Re: calling all yamaha 15hp owners and experts

We have a couple 15hp Yamahas that are a fews years old. They are great motors. Very quiet, but a little heavy when compared our 90's Evinrudes.

$1300 is a little high to me even in Canadian dollars. The motor would have to be in great shape for me to consider it. However, missing paint on the prop would make me question how it was operated or if it really only has 30 hours on it. Wish I could see the pictures.

150 psi is great.
