I have a 1994 Yamaha 85 HP outboard. It runs great until the motor gets warmed up (usually about 20 or 30 minutes)and then it drops to 2000 rpm's even at WOT. I first noticed this problem when I hit a wave hard one day and it dropped to 2000 rpm. I switched it off and started it back up and it ran fine the rest of the day. It has done this several times on different occations sometimes when you are just going straight on calm water and other times when you are making a sharp turn. The controls and ignition switch are only 2 years old (factory Yamaha controls). I put three new coils on it and the carb jets and fuel bowls are super clean. Any Ideas?

No buzzer going off? Sounds like oil or overheat alarm applying the limiter.

The model is a C85TLRS. It does not have a digital tach. I replaced the ignition coils on all three cylinders with new Yamaha coils. The motor does not appear to be overheating.

test the pulser coils and the high speed charge coil, also test the alarm horn.
if all systems are working and your absolutly positive its not overheating retest with the pink wire removed from the CDI.
occasionally the pink wire will get wet or short to ground due to corrosion, wont be enough current to trigger the horn but it can be enough to trigger speed reduction in the CDI.
but first test all alarm circuits and horn for proper operation.

I shorted the overtemp sensor wires and the alarm horn works. Also the volt meter never changes before or after it starts to act up. All wire connectors in the motor compartment look shiny and new. It acts like it is going into a rev-limiting state.
