Hey there Bowfin.

I grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, moved here 6 years ago. My parents were from here, so I have a few relatives in the area. Maybe you might remember Rhonda Deitze, or Molly, Danny, Tammy, or Tom Dassow. They should be around your age, 30 +/-. Also related to lots of Blasels. I'm actually related to half the county, as my family has been here since the 1880's.

4 stop lights in town now.
One by the old Holiday station, one by McDonalds, one on 64, and one on Allman street. Wow!!
A new post office, fire station, a huge library, a new ballpark in Whittlesey, and a new Kwik Trip.
Stetsonville has a big new fire hall too.
Wow, what excitement.

You still can't buy a "meal" after 8pm though.

I live 2 miles northeast of town.
My mother grew up in Stetsonville, a block north of "A", on 13. Grandma(89) still lives there.

I moved here to get away from the big city.
Now if I could only make a decent living here.

i went to school with Danny Dassow. We weren't too close, but you know how those high school clicks are. some people I hung with were Jeff Ruge, Kirsten Peterson, Dahnde Ellner. i wish i could remember more names. i know we have to know some of the same people. My Mom was HR for Tombsone pizza (Linda Gallien-Eggebrecht)and the man she married (Terry Eggebrecht)was part owner of Welcome Dairy cheeses in Colby. i used to live out by Sackets Lake on Lake Romeo and Juliet (don't laugh, that's the real names). Good times. wish i was close enough to go back once in a while. I remember the store on 13. Looked like a rinky-dink gas station, but they had everything. We used to stock up there before we headed to the deer camp up by Superior. When I lived in Medford,we only had one grocery store, a hardee's, tasty treat, and A&W stand. And one stoplight.

Bowfin

Pat- The old Holiday store is still selling all the items, but it is a Shell gas station now. Still full service, for a penny more than self serve station across the street. Some days it is 2-3 cents cheaper???

The "club", never been there, believe it or not.
I've been to a few real nice clubs, so can't justify going to that stink hole. My cousins farm is across the street, its huge, but I think he's going bankrupt, been losing big bucks for over 10 years.

Bowfin- Danny is my cousin, lives a half mile from me. He does road construction-mostly bridges. He also fishes a lot of tournements, mostly Musky. He won $7000 so far this year. He's getting married in April.

I work with Jeff Ruge-Tombstone. He was in a near head-on car crash a month ago. Messed up his neck, and a concousion, still off work, memory problems. Here is his email: Jruge@charter.net

There has always been 2 grocery stores here. The Copps/IGA up on 13, and the Farmers co-op down near mainstreet. THe co-op then built a huge 24 hour grocery up by Kwik Trip. Also in the "PLAZA"!! is a new Hardees, McDonalds, Hardware Store, Big Kmart, Subway, and a clothing store. THe old Hardees at the north end of town is a pizza place. The a&w closed down years ago, then the daughter of the owner killed herself in the building, so they tore it down. There are 4 hotels here now, including an AmericInn. A Chinese eatery, and several new cafes.
they built a new elementaryschool, and a new middle school. And there is a huge indoor hockey rink.

All this growth, but the population is still only 4200 people. ? ?
Its still the biggest town within 40 miles. Heck, you have to go 100 miles north to find a bigger city.

It really is a nice area to live in. Has more to offer than cities ten times the size. But I'm going stir crazy. I either have to move closer to civilization, or move into the woods and become a hermit.

Thanks for catching me up. i'll have to e-mail Jeff and see how he is doing. I'm glad to hear Danny is doing well. Two grocery stores? I forgot about the old Co-op downtown. We used to head out to Wausau or Marshfield whenever we needed a taste of big city life. hockey ring sounds like a great idea. We used to play hockey on that big pond by the highway in Stetsonville. it was brutal. no skates, just tennis shoes, and no true hockey sticks, just broken pieces of snowfence. you can imagine the bloodbath that ensued. i lived near Jeff Ruge and Quinten Denzine when I lived on the outskirts of Medford. quinten had the then state of the art Coleco Vision game console. Me and Jeff mostly shot at squirrels with slingshots and fished a bit.

Bowfin (Brian)

Re: Calling Bowfin , Calling Bowfin, over.

Hey, Bagman, nice to see you on this forum. No problem hijacking, this is a just a social post anyway. I live on the Catawba river system, so lots of bowfin (I'm sure they are here, just haven't got good hookset yet this season), gar, and pesky bass that keep biting when I'm out trying to catch some 'fin. The Santee Cooper (better known for monster catfish) has lots of bowfin and gar. I'll put in a few fishing reports now that I'm motorized with a power paddle. i can stand up in the jon boat, so i should be able to sightfish them better. Should be able to get some more fishing time in the rest of the season.
This catawba river system is a nice series of rocky river, small and large resivors, and some nice class I and II shoals/repids. all kinds of species living in the rivers. We have everything from flathead catfish, bowfin, small and largemouth bass, striper, wiper, crappie, to released tropicals like clown knifes that like the warm water of the nuke plants. I've mostly seen the 'fins surfacing in the shallower bays and inlets of the resivors. they seem to like the creek mouths the best. Gotta fish from a boat on this river system as the fireants will eat you on the shoreline.

Bowfin
