Paul:

What lower unit oil do I need to use in my 1971 40E71B? The Johnson manual says "OMC Type C". Do they still make this or are the modern lower unit oils by Pennzoil, Lubrimatic, etc okay to use? What's the equivalent of OMC Type C?

Also, that's a great looking motor in the photo you sent me along with my questions about cooling water flow expectations. Also, in my test-tank run I achieved the results the photo illustrated when the engine reached operating temp after a few seconds.

Thanks,
Coleman

Re: Calling Paul Moir

Type "C" is now called Premium Blend coleman. There are several lubes on the market for electric shifts. Any should suffice. But just make sure the container states "for electric shifts".

Re: Calling Paul Moir

Coleman's outboard is a manual shift I beleive. Easy enough to tell, there will be a shift handle on the starboard side of the engine.

Those lower units seem to do best with plain old 90 weight outboard gearcase lube. The dealer stuff is called "Hi Vis", but you can find it anywhere that sells oil under a variety of names. I seem to recall something about OMC changing their mind at some point and dropping the Type C recomendation in favor of HiVis, but I'm not certain.

Here's a short "How To" for refilling your gearcase:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033471;p=1#000003
Your case should take just shy of 14oz.

No problem for the photo, and thank you for your complement. You'll notice that the engine block is a little different, especially around the head; that's my 28hp. But the rest is essentially the same.
