Re: Calling PJC
Thanks for calling Flahthead. The chance of some the shoe material getting through the scavenge portion of the oil pump, into the oil tank, weather the softail, or the FL dyna engine families, back through the supply side of the oil pump, through the 10 micron filter, and then supplied through the oil passages is remote. Won't happen. But chunks of that material floating around going where it may before being picked up via the scavenge side of the oil pump cause concern.

The evidence is that there is no hard evidence that the tensioner shoe material spalling from the shoes has any failure affect. And believe me that I was concerned of that. I too preferred the gear drives, known technology. And simple proven durable. Turnes out that the chain driven cams are OK too.

I was concerned regarding how the cam chain drive sprocket was fastened to the crank, but that got sorted out.

Short story is that the tensioner shoe deal is not an issue. Some of the media got a kick out of beating up the shoe spalling.

May sound like I am giving you another PC deal, but I am not. I wanted another bike this year, wound up with an '05 FXD Super Glide. I believe in the twin cam tensioner reliability to date. Check out what is on the 06 models for cam chain tension. Hydraulic. And the dyna tranny/engine oil passages internal. Auto primary chain adjuster, and i a PNA part for $100 for prior BTs. No trade secrets, but changes were made.
I can depend on the reliability of the proven five speed tranny if you understand why I prefer the 5 speed as opposed to the '06 FX dyna family.

Short, IMO, the tensioner shoe deal is moot. I DO NOT like the direction of, for example, FI only offered on the FXD, and so forth begining in 06, (nuther reason I gots an 05), but thats a sign of the times to comply with EPA and CARB.

BTW Flahthead. Happy Hunting!
