I own a 1973 Chrysler Outboard, 55 HP, Model 555 HF, Serial no. 4803. (Coils located underneath the flywheel.)
I was getting a very weak spark and replaced the coils, points and condensers. I installed the parts and still got a very weak spark. I found that the high points of the cam were contacting the metal of the breaker points grounding them out. The points are Mercury Quicksilver 12044, and should be the right part. I also found that these new points are about 3/32" longer than the old ones. Obviously, these new points won't work. Has anyone run into this before? If so, what is the solution? Any other comments or advice? I'm open to suggestions.

Thank you.

There are two different sets of points used on those 55s the 55 with magneto ignition and no alternator uses 12044 points and all others use 12329-2 points.
