Ok, guys, I have a 1957 18hp Johnson, I have been reading alot on here and it has helped me out alot! My question is, is there a hook up on the motor somewhere that will produce 12volts? I know his engine had a starter at one time but was removed being it was bad, but i can't find where to attach wires to charge my battery.....Any Idea's, never had the fly wheel off.... thanks -Chris

The first charging systems' on outboards' were belt driven generator's. Now someone is going to come along, and point out an antigue with an alternator, and I would not be to suprised. Electric starters go way back.

Now that you mention it a spot for a V-belt on the flywheel sounds right.....anyone know where a guy could get a new altinator and maybe a starter?

Give it up Marauder, it ain't gonna happen for the '57 18hp.:D Seriously, there isn't any room under that cowl for a generator and a starter. If there is, I'd like to do it myself, though.:) However, I will mention that laingsoutboards.com or tcoutboards.com(twin city outboards) are places to look for a starter and such. I think they'll charge you about 180 bucks, though. If you learn of a way to do it, post how you did it. I know where there's a will there's a way if you want to do something bad enough.
GOod luck,

Yea I've been reading for hours on this topic now and it seem I am doomed to live with the hassle of limiting my trolling to as far as the battery will last....lol Thanks guys.

Marauder,
On a positive note, if your FD-11 is tuned right you should BARELY have to bump the starter to crank it when warmed up after the first start of the day and a battery charge should last you a long time! I wish I had a starter and starter bracket for my '57 18 johnson and '58 fastwin just for fun.
Later,
JBJ
