Can a 6 volt starting system work w/12 v bat?

Hey guys! would it "damage" anything on my 1956 Johnson Javelin 30HP Outboard that has a 6 volt starting system if i used a 12 volt battery? thanks!

Are you sure its a 6 volt system?

If it is really 6v, wouldn’t it blow the fuses if it was connected to 12v?

You can use a 12 volt battery into a 6 volt starter, it will really spin the motor , BUT, I wouldn't make a steady diet out of doing it. The 6 volt starter windings will heat up pretty fast, shortening it life....<br /><br />Are you absolutely sure it's 6VDC?? Is this a starter only system ??

if your system is 6V please goto local farming center or nappa parts store and ger a 6v battrie :eek:
