A relative has a friend selling his boat. The Mercruiser outdrive drive number is 00535159 with a 454 engine. He forgot to get the boat manufacturer, but it's a late '80's he thinks and 19 ft long.

I'm trying to find out what the drive is.....may be a lite duty drive someone transplanted a bigger engine on. Maybe not too...

You need to look at the outdrive to identify which you have from the link I posted. Then the year model can be determined. My bet its a TR/TRS drive if you think its a late 80's model with a 454. The Alpha one drives of the 80's were really too small to handle the 454.

I Agree with Trent............
Looking is the answer.........
Probably a TR/TRS.....
But, Alphas were used on the Big Blocks for a couple of years, Just before the Bravos came out.......

Thanks everyone...

The boat is not here, just something my son thought I would be interested in . Called me with the numbers...He lives a couple of hundred miles from here. Crankie may have the clue...probably mistook the second didgit for a 0 when it's really a D...

I'm going to start another post with some questions about TR/TRS drives...I'd bet that is what this will wind up being....won't know till this weekend, the friend is out of town.

Re: Can anyone ID this Mercruiser Drive Number?

We found out that the boat is a 1986 SeaRay....but the boat is inside and can't get the VIN verification till tomorrow..

Looks like the drive would would be a 1991 or later Alpha 1 (gen 2) if the second is a D...

If that is the case....and it's really too small for the Big Block?? I guess it would best to pass on this correct??

I've really been after a big block boat...this one is affordable too.

Thanks all...

Its not going to be a Gen 2 Alpha. Unless somebody spent some bucks on her. Too many replacement Alpha 1 out there. Your going to have to look at the drive.

Re: Can anyone ID this Mercruiser Drive Number?

Well I got some real numbers...

The numbers do have a D as the second didgit. However the 1st number I had was on the transom assy...it should have been 0D535159. There is a different number on the outdrive than I was given....it is 0D556160. This drive assembly is supposed to be a 1991 Bravo according to the owner but he said it had been a while since he had it all installed and he wasn't positive.

Now the good news...he thought it wouldn't have to be winterized since it hadn't been in the water since May 2004...Been sitting on a trailer since then. My son pulled the dip stick...No milk...but shows to be 3 or 4 quarts overfull. Guess that means it has water in the bottom of the pan raising the oil level. Too darn bad ..would have been a very spry boat....We had 3 days of below freezing weather day and nite before xmas (teens at nite))..and several below freezing nights since. It's Texas...but we've had a little cold weather too. Actually this has been a pretty mild winter so far.

Whats the chances of the manifolds surviving...any at all ? How about the out drive itself, is it likely damaged? I've got two 454's in my shop, might be able to deal on the boat after he gets it checked and determines that it REALLY has frozen....doubt if he'll spend the bucks to repair it.

SN-0D556160 Mod.No.-5120150DS MERCRUISER BRAVO 1 1.50:1

If it wasn't winterized and the block cracked causing the oil level to rise, I doubt the manifold would have survived. But guessing doesn't help, inspecting does.
One thing, if you have a usable 350 engine, the 1.50 Bravo will work just as well (Better actually) than the alpha drives. But you would need the transom shield and exhaust Y to do the change over. One nice thing about the Bravo drive is no shift interrupt system to contend with.

Hello again Don and thanks for the specs...Most appreciated.

Other than running the boat till the the oil turns to pudding or something, is there an easy way to determine freeze damage on the engine or manifolds. Something my boy might be able to do in my absence?

What's the chances of the drive being damaged as well...

Re: Can anyone ID this Mercruiser Drive Number?

The only way to test them is block things of and pressure test them. If it's a raw water cooled system, pull the risers and block off the water passages with "something". Block off the other ins and out hoses and pump the system up to about 15 psi and see (and listen) to where the air leaks out. There is no set way, just be creative and thing the system thru.
With the drive, drain the gear lube and check it. Then pressure test the drive.
