Can CD's or coils have intermittent problems ?

I've got a Force 125 and WOT is about half speed. Yesterday all of a sudden it ran full speed , then later went back to half. I used a timing light and plug wires on 1 and 4 cylinder were flashing consistantly BUT #2 and 3 were flashing inconsistantly. I'm guessing this is causing the low power but could use some advice . Do the CD's ever go bad and then start working again ?

Sure, blmkso.

The hardest kind of trouble to find in semiconductor devices is the intermittent. Changes in temperature can open a short or short an open circuit. Happens in coils, too.

That is why I like magnetos. Points and capacitors either work or they don't. Coils can still be a problem, though.

you can swop the switch box connections over for 1.4 and 2.3 and see if the fault moves ..if it does then chances are its the switch box ...high voltage is generated under the flywheel and charges a capacitor in the switch box . This is then discharged into the coil to give you your HT ...so you have flywheel coils ..switch box and igniton coils to check

Check all your connections. You might have one that corroded or simply not tight. I'm not familiar with a Force, but check electrical plugs if you have any. Vibration could cause a connection to fail sporadically. Just a thought.

Fucawi , when you mention swapping switch boxes , are you talking about the CD modules ( I have 2) or the coils ( I have one for each plug) ??

All of them - the CD boxes are identical, the coils are identical (except the length of the spark plug wire) so you can swap them all around to test.

I found a rubbed bare wire under the flywheel that was (is) causing my similar problems - pulling the flywheel this weekend to repair.
