I have worked for days and for the life of me can't get shifting in sync. I have adjusted the lower shift rod on leg and linkage on engine and I either get forward with no reverse and visa versa. It was shifting fine before I dropped the lower unit and installed new drive shaft and shifter rod seals. At times with the engine off, the shifter works in forward and reverse, but when it's running it's either forward or reverse, not both. I've adjusted at small increments and no luck. I'm ready for the coo coo farm!:blue::blue::blue: Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Have you the right distance at the lower shift rod intermediate?
The distance between the shift rod bend and the top of the water impeller housing screw at starbord side should be 1/16 in
when the gear is in forward (shift rod push all the way down).
This is a basic start point when adjusting the shift rod.

You sure the yoke and gear shift pin are hooked up right?
That's the short rod the shift yoke rides on.

If the shift rods not screwed in it can be a problem.
The book doesn't say how far in the rod gets screwed in.
I screw it in to the bottom and then back out so it aligns with the pin and cotter key.

That done, shift into F then N then R all the while spinning the prop shaft.

End up in N
Then the shifter. The same thing F N R end up in N

Then match the connectors and hope that works.
Are the cables in the connectors right?
If the cable is out of the detent it will cause problems.

There are no bends in the shift rod at the impeller housing.

I had the shift rod screwed into the yoke exactly like you mentioned. Before I bolted the lower unit back up, I pushed the shift rod up and down and it went into each gear just fine. Cables are locked in the detent. Moving the shifter back and forth, I can see the cable slide back and forth a little right where it enters the hole in the front of the engine cowling. Guess I'll take a look at the cables in the shifter box to see if there is any play. Thanks for your input!!

The shift rod intermediate has a bend and when the LU is in forward gear (shift rod pushed all way down there should be a gap of 1/16 in between the bend and top of water impeller housing.
You adjust it by turning the shift rod lower down into the gear shirt arm.
The gear shift arm holds the yoke.
