Can hole in boot be patched? Lake water use only

I have found a small hole in the boot of my I/O. It seems someone backed into the dock and punctured a hole in the boot about the size of a pencil.

Local hardware store has "thru the roof" rubber roof sealant....Works for temporary fix but you really shouldn't rely on it.

Nope. Nothing will hold for very long. A new boot is only about $100. Inexpensive fix for a part that will sink your boat when broken.

Fix it and grease u-joints while you have outdrive off.

No u-joints on a Stringer.

Depends on the condition of the boot overall, I patched my raw water intake hose with a hot patch made for a tire patch, against all advise given here, it's still there to this day several years later, the hose had been punctured with a screwdriver doing something stupid. Granted it's not something will sink my boat if it doesn't hold.

So the answer here is unanimous, replace it for the 100 or so $, it's way to important to have that hole become something worse over a weekend..
What is some of the things recommended for a proper boot inspection? What do you look for, for ware, before a puncture happens.

Make sure it's in right side up. There shouldn't be any odd creases where it looks like it'll wear a crack fast. If it doesn't fold neatly and evenly, it's probably upside down.
