Hi all,

I love the lines of some of the outboard runabouts on the site below.

http://www.svensons.com/newweb/?boats

I am interested in building the "buzz"or the "victory" and using it with my 1961 Mercury 9.8hp.

Can this be done as stich and glue and how do I go about it? How do I draw the plans for the side and bottom panels (some crazy curves goin' on there!)

Thanks Rob.

Re: Can I build it Stich & Glue (how?)

The people that design these boats have a lot of experience. I wouldnt mess with a design unless I was experienced enough to essentially design one. I think you could do what you want by inspecting similar plans in stitch and glue and then modifying these plans to stitch and glue but that would defeat your stated purpose of getting on the h2o asap. So ,if you want stitch and glue, then keep searching IMO. I found another source for you, Payson boats. I read his book "Instant Boats" some 15 years ago, and even stopped by his shop while on vacation in Maine. His designs were based on Phil Bolger designs, a famous boat designer. The power boats are new to me, but look to be Bolger designs too. The most interesting is for sure a Bolger design, "Sneakeasy". It is 26 feet long, but interesting food for thought. Sneakeasy is like a boat by bolger titled "Poor Man's Cigarette" that I saw somewhere like the old defunct "Small Boat Journal" 15 or 20 years ago. (time flies)
http://www.instantboats.com/boats.html

I followed some links at the sneakeasy page and found tests of a design you might like (diablo). See results of smaller motors like you have at this link. In fact. it might be the same motor you have just a later year. Obviously, the Diablo is a Bolger design, and you can get plans from Payson.

http://www.psnw.com/~jmrudholm/diablo_test.html

I keep finding more and have to update this post. I like this Diablo myself. At any rate, after going to the diablo link above , follow his link to his main Diablo page and he has pics of the construction. It is what they call tack and tape, which is I think the same labor savings as stitch and glue. I bet you could interchange and do stitch and glue here, but best would be to get paysons book "how to build the new instant boats" where he tells how to build that model. I think the plans would be an accessory, and you will probably get all the info you need to build it from the book. Finally, if you don't build it , I will! I will point out one typically cool Bolger feature of the diablo I see from the photos. The seats aft are bench on the sides of the boat, better for a tiller motor.

yep SCO the side seating looks like a good idea but I just don't like the lines. Unfortnately the sneakeasy is just too long but I do like the look of it.

I am fairly familiar with stitch and glue as I have the instructions from bateau (using plastic cable ties) and Glen-L.

I guess I'll just keep looking (unless someone in the know wants to redo the pop-mechanics designs as stitch and glue).

Rob

I like those old lines too. Maybe you could send an email to Payson and ask him if most boats can be built with stitch and glue in place of chine. Good luck with your project.

I have just found a book called "Devlin's Boatbuilding - How to build any boat the stitch and glue way"

Has anyone seen or read this?

So much for getting on the water quickly!

Rob.

Yeah, I bought and then sold it pretty quick after I found Jim Michalak's book. You can find a link to it at www.duckworksmagazine.com or at http://homepages.apci.net/~michalak/
Michalak writes better and has a better section on the nuts/bolts of stitch-n-glue construction. I'm waiting for warmer weather to get a project started...probably a Twang skiff, of Michalak's design.

TWM
