Some one told me that from a 88 hp to a 140 hp all the Johnsons were the same except for the carbs and exhaust. So my question is, if I find a blown 120 can I take the carbs and exhaust off it and put on my 88 and have a 120?

No as a 120 is a looper and yours is a crossflow. The block exhaust porting is also different on various hp's.

You can probably mount a 120 powerhead on yours.

Why not just buy a bigger motor and sell the 88?

Fastbullet is correct. The later 120/140's are big bore loopers. Completely different engine. When compared to the older 140 crossflow engines, though similar-even those blocks are different. The 140 has different porting and has the bubble back exhaust. Not easy to convert your 88 to that configuration. You can add the older high compression heads and the larger 1 5/16" carbs. Those are bolt-on hp additions. (you will probably have to rejet the carbs somewhat.) Also, add the rubber intake filler blocks by the reeds. (they are good for 3-5 hp, but are NLA-so you will have to scrounge around for them.) Composite reeds are also a nice addition. You may get it up to 125 crank hp with the bolt-on adds.
