waiting for the water pump kit to get here I thought I would get the carbs cleaned, synced and make sure it at least idles correctly. can I hook a water hose to the tube that feeds the head? the lower unit is off waiting for parts, thought I might put a Y connector in the water hose so I could regulate the pressure a little.. not sure how much pressure the water pump pushes to the head. I just want to let it at least idle for a little to make sure it runs ok.. I never ran it long enough to see just how good it runs.. been working on the boat non stop and it would suck if after I got the boat ready I find the this motor is junk.. jew pics of the old housing after I glass beaded it ..

Some of the more experienced guys will chime in- but I wouldn't. At this point, there is absolutely NO load on the power head. I may be wrong though...

Yes you can leave the Y-piece out turn the tap on full and wait a few minutes for the block to fill then start the motor.

Turn the water all the way.
The pump housing is still usable.
Might look like crap but will still work.
I have seen them in worse shape and still pumps good.
Next time, don't do anything to it. Just use it.
How worn is the wear plate? any deep cuts?

plate is ok, top seal was rough... got the kit coming anyways .. maybe some JB weld in there.. smooth it up and hone it with a wheel cylinder hone.. lol if I didn't have all the time in the world I would reuse it but a kit is available so I'll wait.. Plus I don't imagine that new impeller would last very long..

You'd be surprised how long they last.
Had twin 88/85hp and never changed the housing and over 25years in salt water made them
worse than the ones in the pic.
I changed the impellers every 3-4 years if they needed it or not:)
Should be changed yearly.
