Hi all,

Looking to connect an aftermarket tacho to my 30 hp 1990 " e model " evinrude outboard.

Now having looked the wiring diagramme for my engine and controls it seems that the evinrude plug in tacho connects to the poss / neg and gray.

Now can i connect the "RPM" part to the grey on my rectifier connections.


Looking forward to all your replies so I can get my prop pitch sorted out and finnaly get the motor and boat to plane.

Depending on your controller the gray wire runs from the engine to the controller and comes out via a plug under the tension screw. The dealer should have the plug to hook the tach to the controller. The plug out of the controller has a switched 12v, (purple I think) and a ground wire as well as the gray signal wire. I have bypassed the plug and ran a wire from engine or controller to under the dash for the signal and then gotten the 12v switched and grd from under the dash. Gray wire for the signal at the engine is on the terminal block with one of the yellows from the stator.

By aftermarket tach I hope you mean aftermarket boat tach. A car tach will not work off the gray wire signal. Check the instructions for the proper setting of the switch on the back of the tach for your particular engine.

Many thanks for the reply, I am looking for an after market tacho from or for a 2 stroke motorcycle which i can change the pulse to 6 according to my local rude dealer, although I had understood the pulse count to be 5 can anyone enlighten me on this also.

Simpler solution is 1 of the tiny tach knock offs on ebay 15 bucks. I have one on my 55.
